Computer Randomly Restarting in Dhaka — Causes & Fixes

21 June 2026 · 13 min read · BAYAS Editorial

You are typing a report, the screen flickers, and your PC restarts without warning. Or worse: you find your computer stuck in a restart loop — fans spin, POST screen flashes, the Windows logo appears, and the cycle starts again. In Dhaka, this is one of the most common complaints our technicians hear, and almost every case traces back to one of eight root causes.

BAYAS diagnoses random restart issues at your home anywhere in Dhaka — certified technicians, thermal imaging, PSU voltage testing, and a 30-day warranty on every repair. Check our Computer Home Service page or WhatsApp 01712-644590 for a same-day slot.

If your PC is rebooting on its own, this guide will help you figure out why, walk through the DIY checks that fix the easy cases, and explain when it is time to call a professional. For the underlying power issues in Dhaka, see our power supply problems guide and our keep PC cool in Dhaka summer post.

Why Do Computers Randomly Restart More Often in Dhaka Than Elsewhere?

Three Dhaka-specific conditions combine to make random restarts far more common than in cities with stable power and cooler climates:

Frequent voltage fluctuations. Dhaka's grid regularly swings between 160V and 270V. The PSU has to compensate, and when voltage briefly drops below the operating threshold, the motherboard resets. You see this as a sudden restart with no warning. A failing PSU also delivers dirty power that triggers the same symptom.

Heat and humidity. Dhaka's ambient temperature rarely drops below 25°C even at night in summer, and indoor temperatures can exceed 38°C in non-AC rooms. CPU and GPU thermal protection kicks in around 95–100°C — and the only safe response is a hard shutdown or restart. Dust clogs heatsinks, dried thermal paste loses conductivity, and case fans slow down in months, not years.

Load-shedding cycles. Each power cut creates an inrush spike when power returns. If your PC is on a low-quality surge protector (or worse, no protector at all), that spike stresses the PSU, motherboard VRMs, and storage drives. The result is intermittent restarts that seem random but are actually correlated with the grid.

For deeper context on each of these stressors, read our desktop PC repair service guide and our UPS repair service in Dhaka for backup power options.

What Are the 8 Most Common Causes of Random Restarts?

If your computer keeps rebooting, the cause is usually one of the eight items below. We have listed them in order of how often we see them in Dhaka.

1. Overheating (CPU or GPU thermal shutdown)

When the CPU or GPU hits its thermal limit (typically 95–105°C), the system performs an emergency shutdown or restart to protect the silicon. In Dhaka, this is the single most common cause.

How to confirm: Download HWMonitor or HWiNFO. Run a stress test (Cinebench, FurMark, or just play a game for 20 minutes). Watch the max CPU and GPU temperature. If either exceeds 90°C under load, you have found your culprit.

Quick fixes:

  • Clean dust from heatsinks and case fans with compressed air
  • Replace dried thermal paste (every 3–5 years for daily-use PCs)
  • Improve case airflow — add a front intake fan if your case only has one exhaust
  • Lower ambient room temperature or run the PC in an AC-cooled room during peak summer
  • Undervolt the CPU by 50–100 mV using ThrottleStop or BIOS settings

BAYAS service: Our computer maintenance service includes thermal paste replacement, deep dust cleaning, fan curve tuning, and case airflow optimization for BDT 2,500–4,500. See our keep PC cool guide for full details.

2. Failing power supply unit (PSU)

A dying PSU is the second most common cause. Symptoms include random restarts under load (gaming, video editing, charging a laptop via USB-C), burning smell, fan noise, and restarts that happen only when you plug in a specific USB device or second monitor.

How to confirm: Open HWMonitor and watch the +12V rail while running a stress test. If voltage drops below 11.4V under load, your PSU is failing. A multimeter on the 24-pin ATX connector gives more accurate readings.

Why Dhaka accelerates PSU failure: Voltage spikes, dust, and constant on-off cycles. Our power supply problems guide covers this in detail with BDT pricing for replacements.

Replacement cost in Dhaka: BDT 3,500 for a basic 550W 80+ Bronze unit, BDT 5,500–7,500 for a quality 650W 80+ Gold unit, and BDT 9,000+ for an 850W unit suitable for gaming PCs.

3. Faulty or failing RAM

RAM errors cause random restarts because the system encounters unrecoverable memory errors and forces a reboot to protect data integrity. A single bad stick can destabilize an otherwise healthy PC.

How to confirm: Run Windows Memory Diagnostic (mdsched.exe) or MemTest86 from a USB stick. Let it run for at least 4 full passes. Any error = bad RAM.

Quick fixes:

  • Reseat the RAM sticks (remove, blow out the slot with compressed air, reinstall)
  • Test each stick individually in Slot 1 to isolate the failing module
  • Clean the gold contacts with isopropyl alcohol and a soft eraser
  • Replace the failing stick — DDR4 8GB is BDT 2,800–3,500 in Dhaka; DDR5 16GB is BDT 6,500–9,000

For RAM upgrades (adding capacity to prevent Windows swap-induced slowdowns), our computer upgrade service handles compatibility checks and installation.

4. Driver crashes and Windows Update bugs

A bad GPU driver or a recent Windows Update can cause a BSoD followed by an automatic restart. This pattern is easy to identify: the restart started after a specific update.

How to confirm: Open Event Viewer → Windows Logs → System. Look for "Critical" errors around the time of each restart. Common sources: disk, nvlddmkm (NVIDIA), atikmdag (AMD), Wdf01000.

Quick fixes:

  • Roll back the GPU driver: Device Manager → Display Adapters → Properties → Driver → Roll Back
  • Uninstall the most recent Windows Update: Settings → Windows Update → Update History → Uninstall
  • Boot into Safe Mode (Shift+Restart) and run sfc /scannow followed by DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

5. Malware or rootkit infection

Some malware deliberately forces reboots to evade detection or to spread. Symptoms include random restarts that started after clicking a suspicious link or installing pirated software, plus general system slowness and unusual network activity.

How to confirm: Boot into Safe Mode with Networking and run a full Malwarebytes scan. Also check Task Manager → Startup tab for unknown entries, and review installed programs for anything you did not install yourself.

Quick fix: See our computer virus and malware removal guide for the full removal process.

6. Overclocking or unstable BIOS settings

If you (or a previous owner) overclocked the CPU, RAM (XMP/EXPO), or GPU, an unstable overclock causes random restarts under load. Even an XMP profile that worked yesterday can become unstable as the silicon degrades or as temperatures rise with summer.

How to confirm: Restart into BIOS and load optimized defaults. Run your normal workload for 24 hours. If the restarts stop, the issue was your overclock or XMP profile.

Quick fix: Reset BIOS to defaults, then re-enable XMP one profile at a time to find the unstable one.

7. Motherboard capacitor or VRM failure

Older motherboards (5+ years) and motherboards that have survived multiple PSU failures can develop bulging or leaking capacitors. The voltage regulation modules (VRMs) that power the CPU can also degrade.

How to confirm: Open the case and visually inspect the capacitors around the CPU socket and RAM slots. Look for tops that are bulging, domed, or have brown crusty leakage. If you see this, the motherboard needs replacement.

Replacement cost in Dhaka: BDT 8,500–18,000 for a budget B760 board, BDT 15,000–35,000 for a mid-range B760 or X670 board. Our motherboard repair cost guide explains the diagnosis vs replacement decision.

8. Storage drive (HDD/SSD) failure

A failing storage drive can cause a restart when the system tries to read a critical file and the drive stops responding. SSDs approaching end-of-life sometimes lock up entirely, forcing a hard reset.

How to confirm: Run CrystalDiskInfo and check the drive's health status. Anything other than "Good" requires immediate backup and replacement. Listen for clicking or grinding sounds from HDDs.

Quick fix: Back up immediately using our data recovery service if the drive is still partially accessible, then replace the drive. For SSD upgrades, our SSD vs HDD guide helps you choose.

How to Diagnose Random Restarts: Step-by-Step

Follow these steps in order. Most cases are resolved by Step 3.

Step 1 — Check Event Viewer. Open Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc) → Windows Logs → System. Filter by "Critical" and "Error" around the timestamp of each restart. The source field usually tells you exactly which component failed.

Step 2 — Run a temperature check. Install HWMonitor and let the PC idle for 30 minutes. Note the idle temperature. Then run Cinebench for 10 minutes and note the load temperature. Idle above 50°C or load above 90°C = overheating.

Step 3 — Run a memory test. Boot from a MemTest86 USB and run at least 4 full passes (overnight is fine). Any error means a RAM replacement.

Step 4 — Test the PSU. A failing PSU often passes light loads but fails under stress. Open HWMonitor's voltages panel and watch the +12V, +5V, and +3.3V rails while gaming or running Prime95. If any rail drops more than ±5% from nominal, the PSU is suspect.

Step 5 — Boot with minimum hardware. Disconnect all USB devices except mouse and keyboard. Remove all but one RAM stick. Disconnect extra drives. Boot and test. If the restarts stop, reconnect components one at a time to find the culprit.

Step 6 — Swap or borrow known-good parts. If you have access to a spare PSU or RAM stick, swap them in. A known-good PSU that fixes the issue is the answer; a known-good RAM stick that fixes the issue is the answer.

If none of these steps identifies the issue, it is time to call a technician. Our desktop PC repair service includes full diagnostic workflow with thermal camera, oscilloscope PSU testing, and component isolation.

How to Prevent Random Restarts in the Future

Once your PC is stable, follow this maintenance routine to keep it that way:

  • Annual dust cleaning. Dhaka dust accumulates faster than anywhere else. Schedule a yearly deep clean.
  • Thermal paste every 3 years. Paste degrades; do not wait for symptoms.
  • UPS or at minimum a quality surge protector. A BDT 2,500 surge protector saves BDT 30,000 in PSU replacements. Our UPS service covers both online and line-interactive options.
  • Keep Windows updated but stagger updates. Avoid installing updates the day they release; wait a week for early bug reports.
  • Back up before any major change. Before swapping a PSU, RAM, or motherboard, back up your data. Our data backup guide covers the basics.
  • Run CrystalDiskInfo monthly. Early warning on drive health saves data.

For comprehensive PC care, our computer maintenance service is the easiest way to keep your PC stable year-round.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my computer restart only when playing games? This is almost always PSU or overheating. Under gaming load, the GPU and CPU draw maximum power. If the PSU cannot deliver stable voltage, or if the GPU cooler cannot dissipate the heat, the system restarts. Check HWMonitor during a game session.

Can load shedding damage my computer and cause restarts later? Yes. Voltage spikes during power return can partially damage the PSU, motherboard VRMs, or storage drive. The damage may not show up immediately but causes intermittent restarts weeks later. A surge protector or UPS prevents this.

My laptop randomly restarts but only on battery, not when plugged in. This is almost always a battery issue or a power management driver bug. Run the battery report (powercfg /batteryreport). If the battery is severely degraded, our laptop battery replacement guide covers diagnosis and BDT pricing. Otherwise, update or reinstall the battery driver in Device Manager.

Is a random restart dangerous for my data? Yes — sudden power loss can corrupt open files, damage the SSD controller, and in extreme cases destroy the storage drive. Back up important files immediately and stop using the PC until the cause is identified.

Should I just buy a new computer instead? Not yet. Most random restart issues are resolved with a BDT 2,500–8,000 repair. Replacement only makes sense if the motherboard has failed and the rest of the PC is more than 7 years old. Our how to choose a computer repair service guide explains when to repair vs replace.
