MacBook Water Damage: The First 60 Minutes Decide Everything

Water damage is the most time-sensitive repair we handle at BAYAS. The longer current flows through a wet circuit, the more corrosion forms — and corrosion eats traces, vias and ICs in days. A MacBook recovered within an hour usually survives. One that waited a week often doesn't.

Here is the BAYAS protocol for the first 60 minutes.

Step 1. Power off immediately

Hold the power button for 10 seconds to force shutdown. Do not try to save your work. Do not let it run "to dry out". A powered wet board is a board that is killing itself.

Step 2. Disconnect everything

Unplug the charger, any USB devices, and any external drives. If you can identify the battery connector inside (older Intel MacBooks), disconnecting it is best — but only if you have the tools and confidence. Otherwise, just power off.

Step 3. Flip and drain

Turn the MacBook upside down, opened like a tent, on a towel. This lets liquid drain out of the keyboard and bottom case rather than pooling on the logic board.

Step 4. Do NOT do these things

• Do not press the power button "just to check".
• Do not put it in rice. This is folklore. Rice does not absorb water from inside a sealed laptop.
• Do not use a hair dryer. Heat accelerates corrosion and can warp the screen seal.
• Do not tilt it to drain coffee out the speaker grilles — that pushes liquid into more components.
• Do not charge it. Mains power to a wet board is the fastest way to kill it.

What happens in the workshop

We open the MacBook, remove the logic board, disconnect the battery, and place the board into an ultrasonic cleaning bath with the correct frequency and solvent. This removes invisible corrosion that an alcohol-and-cotton swab cannot reach.

After cleaning, we inspect under microscope for component damage, replace any damaged ICs or burned passives, reflow if needed, and reassemble. Test cycle: charge, boot, sensor calibration, peripheral check.

Pricing reality

Liquid recovery on a MacBook typically starts at BDT 4,500 and can rise to BDT 15,000 to 30,000 depending on which components died. A full logic board replacement, by contrast, often exceeds BDT 60,000 to 100,000 — and on Apple Silicon Macs, paired SSD storage makes a logic board swap a data loss event.

Apple Silicon owners — extra urgency

On M1, M2, M3 and M4 Macs the SSD is paired to the Secure Enclave on the logic board. If the board cannot be repaired, your data is gone. Chip-level recovery is the only realistic path to recovering files. That makes the first hour even more critical than it was on Intel MacBooks.
