Why upgrade from HDD to SSD?
The difference between an HDD and an SSD is night and day. Here is what you can expect after the upgrade.
| Metric | HDD (old) | SSD (new) | Improvement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows boot time | 45–90 seconds | 8–15 seconds | 5–6× faster |
| Application launch (Photoshop, Chrome) | 10–20 seconds | 2–4 seconds | 4–5× faster |
| File transfer (1 GB) | 30–60 seconds | 3–10 seconds | 5–10× faster |
| Power consumption | 6–10 watts | 2–4 watts | 50–60% less |
| Noise | Spinning platters (audible hum) | Silent (no moving parts) | Complete elimination |
| Shock resistance | Fragile — drops can destroy data | Very durable — no moving heads | Major improvement |
| Lifespan | Mechanical wear (3–5 years typical) | Write endurance (5–10 years typical) | 2× longer on average |
For an old laptop (2015–2020), an SSD upgrade is the single best investment you can make. It will feel like a brand-new machine for BDT 3,000–8,000.
Types of SSDs: SATA vs NVMe vs M.2
Not all SSDs are the same. Choosing the wrong one for your system is a common mistake. Here is how they differ.
SATA SSD (2.5-inch)
- Connector: Standard SATA III (same as old HDD)
- Max speed: ~550 MB/s read, ~520 MB/s write
- Form factor: 2.5-inch, fits in any laptop or desktop with a SATA port
- Best for: Older laptops (pre-2018), desktops without M.2 slots, secondary storage
- BAYAS price (installed): See table below
SATA M.2 SSD
- Connector: M.2 B-key (SATA protocol)
- Max speed: Same as 2.5-inch SATA (~550 MB/s)
- Form factor: Small stick, fits M.2 SATA slots (common in older ultrabooks)
- Best for: Ultrabooks and thin laptops that accept M.2 SATA
NVMe M.2 SSD (PCIe Gen 3)
- Connector: M.2 M-key (NVMe protocol)
- Max speed: 2,000–3,500 MB/s read, 1,500–3,000 MB/s write
- Form factor: Small stick, fits M.2 NVMe slots
- Best for: Most laptops from 2018 onwards, modern desktops
- Note: This is the most common upgrade we perform at BAYAS — huge speed jump
NVMe M.2 SSD (PCIe Gen 4)
- Connector: M.2 M-key (NVMe protocol, backward compatible with Gen 3 slots)
- Max speed: 5,000–7,500 MB/s read
- Best for: High-end gaming laptops (ROG, Predator), desktop workstations
- Note: You need a Gen 4 compatible motherboard/chipset (Intel 11th gen+ or AMD Ryzen 5000+) to see full speeds

Data cloning vs fresh install: Which should you choose?
When upgrading to an SSD, you have two paths. Each has its pros and cons.
Data cloning (recommended for most users)
Your technician copies everything from the old HDD — Windows, programs, files, settings — directly onto the new SSD. When you power on, everything looks and works exactly as before, only much faster.
Pros:
- No need to reinstall Windows or applications
- All settings, bookmarks, and saved passwords preserved
- No downtime searching for software licenses
- Takes 30–60 minutes with our cloning station
Cons:
- Clones any existing problems (bloatware, corrupted files, viruses)
- Requires the old drive to be readable
Fresh Windows install
We install a clean copy of Windows on the new SSD and then manually copy your personal files from the old drive.
Pros:
- Clean slate — no junk, no viruses, no driver conflicts
- Fresh start feels even faster
- You can choose to upgrade to Windows 11 if hardware supports it
Cons:
- Takes 2–4 hours (Windows install + updates + driver installation + app reinstallation)
- You must reinstall every application and reactivate licenses
- Risk of forgetting important files during manual copy
Our recommendation: If your old HDD is healthy and not infected, go with cloning — it takes 1 hour and you get exactly the same experience, but faster. If your system has been running for 3+ years with lots of installed junk, a fresh install is worth the extra time.
Which laptops and desktops support what?
Laptops
| Laptop age | Likely supported SSD type | Upgrade possible? |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-2015 | SATA III 2.5-inch (replace HDD) | Yes — moderate speed gain |
| 2015–2017 | SATA III 2.5-inch or SATA M.2 | Yes — moderate speed gain |
| 2018–2020 | NVMe M.2 Gen 3 + optional SATA slot | Yes — huge speed gain |
| 2021–2024 | NVMe M.2 Gen 3 or Gen 4 | Yes — maximum speed gain |
| MacBook (all years) | Proprietary Apple SSD or soldered storage | Contact BAYAS for compatibility |
Desktops
Most desktop motherboards have multiple SATA ports and at least one M.2 slot (Gen 3 or Gen 4). Almost all desktops built after 2012 can be upgraded to an SSD.
Common desktop configurations:
- Single SSD (as boot drive) — Windows + apps on SSD, old HDD as secondary storage for files. This is the fastest and most cost-effective setup.
- Dual SSD RAID — Two SSDs in RAID 0 for extreme speed (video editors, 3D rendering). Only for advanced users.
- SSD + HDD — SSD for OS and programs, HDD for documents, photos, and media. Best value-for-money setup.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will an SSD upgrade void my laptop warranty?
If your laptop is still under manufacturer warranty, opening the case may void it. At BAYAS, we can advise on warranty-safe upgrade procedures. For out-of-warranty systems (most laptops in Dhaka), there is no concern.
Can I add an SSD without removing my existing HDD?
On most laptops, there is only one drive bay. You would replace the existing HDD with an SSD. However, many modern laptops have an extra M.2 slot — we can check your model specifically. On desktops, you can always add an SSD alongside existing drives.
How long does an SSD upgrade take at BAYAS?
1–3 hours for cloning, 3–4 hours for a fresh install. Most upgrades are ready same day.
What brand SSDs do you use?
We primarily use Samsung (EVO series), WD Blue/Black, Kingston (KC/NV series), Transcend, and ADATA. You can choose your preferred brand and model.
Do you provide the Windows license?
If your laptop already has a valid Windows license (embedded in BIOS or sticker), we preserve and use it. If not, we can advise on obtaining a genuine license.
My old HDD has bad sectors — can you still clone it?
In most cases, yes. Our cloning software can skip bad sectors and recover what is readable. In extreme cases where the drive is completely dead, we would need to use our data recovery equipment — see our data recovery service.
